When “True” Isn’t the Truth: Living by What God Says, Not Just What We See

Life is filled with very real, very hard circumstances—chronic illness, financial strain, broken relationships, anxiety, depression. These are not illusions. They are experiences that feel painfully true. And in many ways, they are.

But here’s the tension we live in as followers of Jesus: just because something is true in your experience doesn’t mean it’s the Truth with a capital “T.”

Let me explain.

The Difference Between What’s True and What’s Truth

What’s true might be what’s happening right now.
What’s Truth is what God says about it.

You may be walking through sickness—that’s true. But God’s Word says:

“By His wounds we are healed.” (Isaiah 53:5)

You may be facing lack or poverty—that’s true. But Scripture says:

“My God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19)

You may be wrestling with depression—that’s true. But Jesus says:

“I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” (John 10:10)

Facts describe a moment. But Truth defines the ultimate reality.

And as believers, we are invited to live in agreement with Truth—God’s truth—not just our temporary facts.

Why This Matters

If we align our minds and hearts only with what’s true in the natural, we will stay stuck—limited by circumstances, emotions, and pain. But when we align ourselves with God’s Truth, we begin to access the supernatural power, perspective, and peace He has already made available through Jesus.

John 8:31-32 says:

“If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Notice it doesn’t say the facts will set you free.
It says the truth will—and that Truth is always found in Him.

Coming Into Agreement with God’s Truth

God isn’t asking you to deny your reality. He’s asking you to bring your reality into agreement with His Word. That’s what faith does. It looks at the storm and still says, “Peace is possible.” It looks at the dry bones and still says, “Life is coming.” It looks at the cross and still says, “Resurrection is on the way.”

We don’t ignore what’s hard. We just refuse to make it our final authority.

A Prayer to Align with God’s Truth

Father God,
I bring before You the things in my life that feel painfully true. The struggles, the limitations, the pain—I lay them at Your feet. But I choose today to not let those things define me or my future. I want to live in agreement with Your truth, not just my own experiences.

Help me to see what You see. Speak Your truth over every area where I’ve believed lies or settled for less. Replace discouragement with hope, fear with faith, and confusion with clarity. I declare that Your Word is my foundation, not my emotions or circumstances.

Jesus, You are the Way, the Truth, and the Life. I align my heart and mind with You.

In Your name,
Amen.

You can acknowledge what’s true and still choose to live by the Truth.
Let God’s Word have the final say—because only His truth has the power to set you free.
